Who Is Alex Spiro, Really
Before he was billing four figures an hour, Spiro was a Manhattan prosecutor putting people away, not getting them off. He helped convict Rodney Alcala, the so-called “Dating Game Killer,” and later won a conviction against murderer Travis Woods at trial.
He studied psychology at Tufts, graduated summa cum laude, made Phi Beta Kappa, then went to Harvard Law. In between all that, he spent a few years at McLean Hospital running a program for kids with autism and Asperger’s.

When Spiro represented Mayor Eric Adams, his firm billed the city far below his usual rate. The number attached to his name isn’t always the number he’s actually charging.

The Cases That Built His Reputation
- 2016, Aaron Hernandez: Brought onto the case by Ron Sullivan, his old Harvard mentor, Spiro helped get Hernandez acquitted on the 2012 double-murder charges.
- 2019, Musk defamation trial: Vernon Unsworth sued Musk over a tweet from the Thai cave rescue saga. It was one of the first defamation cases over a single tweet to actually go to trial. Musk won.
- 2019, 21 Savage’s ICE case: Resolved on bond within about a week.

There are two separate Adams cases, and Spiro’s involvement in each one is different.
The federal corruption case: Spiro is still lead counsel here, representing Adams against charges of bribery and illegal foreign contributions dating back nearly a decade.
The civil sexual assault suit, he’s off it: In a separate civil case accusing Adams of a decades-old assault, Quinn Emanuel formally withdrew after New York City’s Conflicts of Interest Board raised concerns that representing Adams in both the criminal and civil matters at once created at least the appearance of a conflict. Same client, two different cases, two different answers about Spiro’s involvement.
The Musk Twitter and Tesla trial: As of this spring, Spiro is still Musk’s attorney of record in the ongoing shareholder litigation over the 2022 Twitter deal, but he stepped back from questioning the jury directly after being named as a possible witness himself. He briefly testified in March. The case, Pampena v. Musk, is still working its way through federal court in San Francisco.
